IFA 2012: All the mobiles from the show

IFA 2012 is expected to be quite the opportunity for the mobile phone manufacturers of the world to launch their little darlings into the public realm. While MWC was more commonly used for just that purpose, a more recent biannual smartphone cycle has seen IFA take just as an important role in the routine. And, if you want to know about phones, the whole phones and nothing but the phones from IFA 2012 in Berlin, then you've come to the right place.
We'll be updating this page with all the mobile phone announcements from Europe's biggest consumer technology show. Whether it's the news, the pictures or a hands-on account of the features, you'll find it here.

HTC Desire X

HTC has announced the HTC Desire X at IFA in Berlin, dubbing the phone perfect for Android users wanting plenty of power, but not so much power as the company's flagship One series models. The is best described as a smartphone rather than a superphone - HTC's words not ours.

Although the company has yet to confirm pricing, HTC has told Pocket-lint that it will be aimed below the HTC One V announced at Mobile World Congress back in February (currently available free in the UK on a 18-month contract at £21 a month from O2), but above the HTC Desire C. The phone itself is sleek and slender, will sport a 4-inch touch screen with WVGA 480 x 800 resolution.

Samsung Ativ S

Samsung has unveiled a Windows Phone 8 device in the shape of the Samsung Ativ S. Sporting a huge 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 1.5GHz dual-core processor, the Samsung Ativ S also has HSPA+42 connectivity.
Samsung has also kitted the phone with an 8-megapixel camera and a 1.9-megapixel front-facer for video calls. With such top-end specs, the Samsung Ativ S provides a Windows Phone 8 alternative to the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S III that has served the Korean manufacturer so well.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 tablet-come-phone is now official. The 5.5-inch "phablet" is run by a 1.6GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM. The touchscreen is made up of a HD Super AMOLED 1280 x 720 16:9 display, and Samsung claims that it's thinner, lighter and brighter than on the phone's predecessor.

The device comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean from the box, there's an 8-megapixel camera on the rear and a 1.9-megapixel one on the front. The rear camera is coupled with an LED flash while many of the features found on the Galaxy S III have made it to the Note 2: Best Photo, Best Faces and Low light shot.

Samsung Galaxy Camera

There have been camera phones, phone cameras, cameras and simply phones but finally Samsung has come up with one that we’re not quite sure what it is at all. The Samsung Galaxy Camera is a connected camera. There's a 3G and Wi-Fi version as well as a 4G and Wi-Fi version. What all of that means is that you can connect your pictures to the cloud and the cloud to your picture whenever and wherever you like.

It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, has a 16-Megapixel 1/2.3” BSI CMOS unit and it’ll capture light focused at it through a 23mm wide angle lens - a piece of glass far superior to that of a camera phone. What’s more, that lens will also offer you up to a whopping 21x optical zoom. Yes, optical, not digital.

Sony Xperia T

The Sony Xperia T will be the company's new flagship device. Built on the Arc design, it has a 4.6-inch Bravia display and features NFC to connect an array of Sony devices. It's a system that Sony has already used with its SmartTags already available.

The Xperia T comes packing a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Krait dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 1850mAh battery, and will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at launch rather than Jelly Bean. Its 13MP camera features 16x digital zoom and Sony's Exmor R image sensor, and will shoot full 1080p video. There's also up to 16GB of on-board memory expandable to 32GB via microSD.

Sony Xperia V

The Sony Xperia V might not be the pinnacle of what the company has to offer for 2012 but it's not a long way off. What's more, it seems it's designed to last you a little while. What you get is a water resistant handset to use it "come rain or shine" says Sony, with very similar specs to the Sony Xperia T.

It has the the same 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 13MP camera, Ice Cream Sandwich OS and NFC technology. The screen size, however, is a touch more modest at 4.3 inches on the diagonal with a 720p HD Reality Display. It will also come with LTE support in the US.

Sony Xperia J

The Sony Xperia J will be the company's more "budget friendly" offering. What you get for your currently unknown amount of cash is a Android device with a 4.0-inch FWVGA Display, some social media updates with illumination (whatever that might refer to) and a 5-megapixel camera.

There's no word on what version of Android but we'd expect Ice Cream Sandwich and it will be available in black, gold, white and pink. More info and better pictures when we get them.

LG Optimus L9

LG has announced a new follow-up to the L Series, first announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February: the LG Optimus L9. The new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone sits at the top of the so called "L tree" and comes packed with all the usual treats in a 9.1mm thick chassis.

It has a 9.1mm thin body, a 4.7-inch IPS display, 1Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, 5-megapixel camera, a rather large 2,150mAh SiO+ battery that promises a full day without the need to find a charger and LG's own custom Android skin. There's also a QTranslator function that will help you translate 44 foreign languages to 64 user languages when you are on your travels.

Acer Liquid Gallant (Duo)

The Acer Liquid Gallant and Acer Liquid Gallant Duo are exactly the same apart from the latter having dual-SIM capability. The phones run Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and feature a 4.3-inch 960 x 540 resolution display. The camera is a 5-megapixel snapper with LED flash and Acer is keen to flag that it has the power button positioned on the back of the handset.
The reasoning behind this, apparently, is that it makes it easier to illuminate the screen when you take the device out of your pocket. Both phones are available in “gentle black” and “ceramic white”, while the Acer Liquid Gallant Duo’s dual-SIM credentials mean users can insert two SIMs into the handset and switch between two different phone numbers and tariffs simultaneously.
